Spring is in full swing and so is the season of trips, treks and other outdoor events. And that requires, above all, proper trekking boots! We only have one pair of legs. In this article, we will advise you on the choice and at the same time throw in a few specific tips for shoes that can withstand anything with you.

High or low?

This depends on the area you are going to and also on the difficulty of the planned treks.

You can use high boots if you plan to trek through stony paths, mud or slippery grass. When choosing high boots, also think that they should not be too heavy, otherwise they would do more harm than good to you during the trek.

Advantages of high boots:

  • protect the ankle from sprains,
  • absorb shocks better,
  • fix the leg better.

High boots protect the ankle from sprains and are suitable for more demanding terrain or trips with a heavy backpack.

Low boots, on the other hand, are more suitable for forests, hiking trails and paved roads. Although they are not as durable as high boots, their advantage is higher flexibility, lower weight and better stability.

Advantages of low boots:

  • are more universal,
  • usually have a lower weight,
  • are more comfortable to wear.

The right size is the key

It probably won't surprise you that one of the main points is the correct boot size. There is nothing worse than when your boots are too tight or too loose. In alpine tourism, this rule applies doubly. In the best case, ill-fitting boots will ruin an otherwise pleasant trip, in the worst case, they can even endanger your health.

So allow yourself enough time to try on the boots. If possible, test the boots on a hiking trainer to see if the boots will fit well while walking uphill and downhill.

  • Try on the boots ideally in the afternoon, when the foot is already well-perfused or even slightly swollen.
  • For testing, wear the type of socks you will be trekking in. Quality wool socks will probably have a different thickness than regular socks.
  • Please refer to the size chart when purchasing online. Numbering may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
  • Do you have one foot a little bigger? This is also normal. But the boots must always fit on both feet. If one boot is too tight, choose a larger size.

There are many criteria that good trekking boots should meet. These include, for example, breathability, water resistance, non-slip sole and shock absorption. Trekking shoes Alfa Walk King Air A/P/S/ Gore-Tex do it all.

The right boot shape

The boot should also fit your ankle, instep and toes perfectly. If you have a lot of free space in the ankle and heel area, you can expect unpleasant blisters. Complications are also likely to be caused by a boot that is too narrow, which, in addition to bruised toes and blisters, can also cause inflammation of the nail bed.

Breathability and water resistance

If the boots fit you perfectly, it is worth checking whether the boots are sufficiently breathable and waterproof. If so, you've won. Otherwise, consider looking for other boots that will protect your foot from steam.

Don't believe the myths!

Like everything else, the choice of boots is surrounded by a number of myths. We have prepared an overview of the most common ones for you.

1) The most important thing is that the boots fit tightly.

It is not so. You must have enough space in your boots, especially for your toes and instep. If you buy boots that are really worn out, you probably won't put a warmer sock in them. The same problem awaits you even in case of minor swelling, your boots will then be too tight.

2) I can go anywhere in waterproof boots!

Unfortunately, that's not true either. It is not advisable to play with water on treks, as it can ruin your experience of the whole trip in a second. A waterproof boot is likely to survive wet grass, rain and melting snow. But few of them can cope with a stream, because water can flow through the seams and lacing quite easily. Pack trekking sandals for fording streams and rivers.

3) It doesn't matter what socks I put in my boots.

As we mentioned above, quality socks are the basis of success. If you go on a trek in cotton socks, your feet will get steamy very quickly. Cotton socks dry more slowly, you will have to change them often and dry them even more often.

4) I don't have to care much about boots.

Hiking boots can be difficult to breathe when their pores are clogged with mud and dust. For the best functionality of the boots, it is necessary to take care of them regularly. Without regular washing, airing, drying and impregnation, sooner or later it will reliably end its service.
